For some it is graduation, for some it is their 16th birthday, but for most kids in Germany, the confirmation is a big deal and an occasion to celebrate with family and friends.
We had some family members from the US, from France, from everywhere in Germany, come together for this young man's big day:
Don't worry, he is not as lost as he seems, and the parents were proud.
William chose to be confirmed in the same church he was baptized in, which also happens to be Hamburgs most famous church: the St. Michaelis Kirche (or just the Michel, as everyone calls it). The service was so lovely, it made me jealous! A very thoughtful sermon was held by the priest, the church-band duo Trinity took care of the musical accompaniment, which made the service softer and lovelier, and a trombone band added a little spice to it all.
It was cold that day, although it was in May, but we managed to get a picture in front of the church with a bit of a hustle. At least we all look good! I regret not wearing my heels at that moment, I feel so tiny on the picture...
The Michel is very close to the Elbe and the harbor, so we took a little stroll down to the river.
After a short boat ride, we finally arrived at the restaurant. We chose Lutter und Wegner in February when we had dinner there for my Dad's birthday. We booked the separate room, which ended up being a very good decision.
We had a champagne reception first. This right here is an olive-tomato Flammkuchen with rocket and parmesan. I am so sorry, but I didn't even manage to get a picture of the other amuse-bouche, like the tempura prawns which were too delicious to even hold in your hand for more than five seconds. Forgive me, but I'm sure you understand.
The view wasn't too shabby either, as the restaurant is on the riverfront.
I'm not sure if this is a big thing anywhere else than in Germany, but here, the Hugo is the not-so-new trend drink. It's made of champagne, lime, ice cubes and elderflower cordial. Absolutely delicious.
The boys were, luckily, also enjoying themselves.
That's me. If you're wondering (admit it, you are), my necklace is from Zara.
Finally, it was time to sit down and come to the "real" stuff. I was reduced to "Emma H." that day because another Emma was present. Makes me sound like a criminal every time I read it out loud. Try it, you'll see!
Maybe just one more Hugo...
The salad. It looks less spectacular than it tastes. Hands down one of the best I've had. Oh wait, I had my brother's, too. Hands down two of the best I've had.
Then, you could choose between fish and meat.
I opted for the dorade with tomato pesto on saffron risotto.
While the meat was Lutter und Wegner's specialty: the Wiener Schnitzel.
When dessert came along, absolutely no one was hungry anymore... But who can resist a mountain of Kaiserschmarrn with vanilla ice cream, plums and strawberries? That's right, no one! So we squeezed dem chunks down, but only two out of twenty finished their plate completely. I guess that might give you an idea of how much we ate.
I hadn't seen most of the friends and family who came for a relatively long time, and I'm really grateful they came all this way. Some were here for a week, some for the weekend, some for the day, but it was so worth it and we had a very nice time.
Sooo, when's the next family gathering? Maybe a wedding this time?
